Early 2023: affordable premium economy fares and AAdvantage award promotions for Chile

DEALS - 29-08-2022

It is rare to find inexpensive travel options, especially while traveling in an excellent seat, to Chile.
We were happy to find that there would be alternatives for both, beginning in a short while.

American Airlines is offering some fantastic premium economy tickets throughout the first few months of 2023, leaving from a few important cities.
While waiting, you may book award flights to the capital city of the South American country for a fraction of the miles you would typically have to redeem if you have a large enough collection of points or miles.

Using AAdvantage miles, you can book flights from a variety of U.S. destinations to Santiago for 40,000 miles round trip for main cabin routes, which is a great savings compared to American's award chart.

There are many excellent reasons to fly to Santiago, whether you want to explore all that the city has to offer in terms of culture or want to venture out and see other parts of the nation, including the Andes, the Chiloe Archipelago, and the Patagonia region.

Basics of Deals

American Airlines

Routes: New York, Miami, and other U.S. cities to Santiago in main cabin for award flights, as well as Los Angeles or Seattle to Santiago in premium economy.

Travel window: 2023 late winter to early summer

Booking advice: Deal directly with the airline.
For cash fares, there is also Google Flights to consider.

We took note of round-trip premium economy airfares to Santiago that were priced at about $1,000.
For premium economy round journeys departing from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and Seattle/Tacoma International Airport between February and July 2023, American has availability in that price range (SEA).

Almost all of these routes include a stop at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) before taking a longer journey on one of American's Boeing 787 Dreamliner planes from DFW to Santiago.

While premium economy round trip tickets from DFW and a number of other major U.S. cities during that time period fall in the $1,200 to $1,600 range, it's interesting to note that the same discounts don't appear to be offered for nonstop flights from DFW. Nonetheless, this represents a significant discount over the regular premium economy fares to Santiago.

Meanwhile, there's a good probability that there will be plenty award availability to Santiago in the main cabin if you're not departing from Los Angeles or Seattle.

Check out the month of April on American's reward schedule for round trips starting in New York.
You can book flights for 20,000 AAdvantage miles each way for virtually the entire month.

That is a savings of nearly a third compared to the regular award chart pricing methodology, which charges 30,000 miles each way for flights to "South America Region 2," which covers most flights to Chile.
This indicates that you will save around 20,000 miles round-trip, or $354 in savings.

Just a few of the routes and costs we discovered are listed below:

    • Los Angeles to Santiago on American Airlines for $997 in premium economy

    • Seattle to Santiago on American for $1,007 in premium economy

    • 40,000 AAdvantage miles in the main cabin from Los Angeles to Santiago on American

    • 40,000 AAdvantage miles in the main cabin from Seattle to Santiago on American

    • 40,000 AAdvantage miles in the main cabin from New York to Santiago on American

    • 40,000 AAdvantage miles in the main cabin on American from Miami/Fort Lauderdale to Santiago

Here's just one of many alternatives you have available if you want to take advantage of this southern California availability during the first few months of 2023. We'll start by looking at a premium economy itinerary.
The flight from Los Angeles to Dallas/Fort Worth takes off in the afternoon.
After a brief stopover, the flight to Santiago on a Dreamliner takes nine and a half hours.
The following morning, you'll arrive in Chile early.

On the way back, there is a second red-eye flight up to Dallas-Fort Worth, followed by a mid-morning flight from Texas to the west coast.

The best options out of Seattle include a stop at DFW and the same route between American's base city and Santiago, like many of the itineraries you'll discover to Santiago.

40,000 miles from Miami International Airport (MIA) or Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport, South Floridians have two options (FLL).
Similar to the New York option, this Fort Lauderdale itinerary begins with a late-afternoon departure for DFW.
You'll arrive back in Fort Lauderdale shortly after 11:00 a.m. after your return long-haul flight.

In conclusion

Whether you have 40,000 AAdvantage points in your account or can fly to Chile from a West Coast city with amazing premium seating discounts, there are several ways to travel to Chile in the first half of 2023. This could be a terrific opportunity to book an exciting trip for the next year, especially in light of all there is to see and do in the stunning South American country and the relative rarity of these bargains.
