Fall special on Southwest Airlines: one-way prices as little as $59

DEALS - 20-08-2022

I haven't written about Southwest Airlines in a while. I grew up traveling with the carrier because of its hub at St. Louis Lambert International Airport (STL).
Southwest has affordable one-way ticket options, so I'll surely utilize them this fall if I need to travel back home.

Consider this timely offer from Southwest if you need to make last-minute travel arrangements this fall or if you think you'll need a getaway after the holidays.
For travel booked by August 26th, the promotion offers one-way Wanna Get Away flights beginning at $59 and Wanna Get Away Plus fares as low as $79.

Basics of deals

Airline: Southwest Airlines.

All Southwest routes, with the exception of interisland travel within Hawaii.

Directly through the airline sale page is how to make a reservation.

When possible, nonstop service or a single connecting flight must be reserved at least 21 days in advance.
Please be aware that the listed fares do not include taxes and fees if you choose to use Southwest Rapid Rewards points to pay for the flight.

Flight examples

If your travel dates are open, I'd advise looking through Southwest's Low Fare Calendar based on your intended location and preferred month of travel.

From there, you can easily find out when the cheapest flights are offered along your route.
There are several instances of cheap one-way flights available, like:

    • Starting at $59, you may fly from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) to Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY).

    • Starting at $59, you may fly from Midway International Airport (MDW) to Nashville International Airport (BNA).

    • Starting at $78 from LaGuardia Airport (LGA) to Miami International Airport (MIA).

    • Starting at $78 one-way, Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) to Denver International Airport (DEN).

    • Starting at $78 are flights from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) to San Francisco International Airport (SFO).

    • Starting from $94, flights from Orlando International Airport (MCO) to LGA.

    • Starting at $94 from MDW to AUS

    • Starting at $106 from LGA to Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA).

Although it states that this promotion is for one-way travel, you may use the Low Fare Calendar to search as you normally would for round-trip travel and are likely to find the same-priced flight each way.
To make a round journey from Los Angeles to Denver in October, for instance, you may combine two one-way tickets. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays of the entire month, there are a number of flights available for $78.

Choose the most convenient trip dates after that, and be sure you choose the least fare option.
In this instance, the Wanna Get Away price is available for $78 round-trip.
Alternately, you could upgrade to the Wanna Get Away Plus fare for $20.

Verify again after choosing your flights that the round-trip pricing includes two one-way tickets for $78 each.

The cost of the round-trip flight in this instance will be $156 plus $38 in taxes and fees.

Keep in mind that the cost of the same flight would be $9,788 in Rapid Rewards points + $11.20 in taxes and fees.
Since Rapid Rewards points are now valued at 1.5 cents each, using points would result in negligible savings in this situation.
So, I advise that you take advantage of this discount and pay the cash fare.
Save your points for a redemption that will let you make greater savings.

The carrier's two cheapest fare kinds, Wanna Get Away and Wanna Get Away Plus, are included in this promotion.
Although the costs are comparable, Wanna Get Away Plus gives customers a better earning rate (8 points for every $1 spent) and supports same-day flight adjustments.
Two free checked bags and two free carry-on items are included with every Southwest price.

Enhance your purchase

Use a credit card that offers extra points for air travel if you decide to book this package.
Southwest Rapid Rewards Priority Credit Card, Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card, or Southwest Rapid Rewards Plus Credit Card (all three earn three points every dollar spent on Southwest purchases) are options for regular flyers of Southwest (2 points per dollar on Southwest purchases).
Alternatively, you might use the Citi Prestige® Card or The Platinum Card® from American Express (5 points per dollar on travel booked directly with the airline or through American Express Travel, on up to $500,000 in purchases per calendar year) (5 points per dollar on airfare).

In conclusion

Although you'll need to look around for this offer, you can discover flights for as little as $59 on some Southwest itineraries.
For travel through mid-February, rates are in effect.
With this offer, you have the benefit of time since travel can be scheduled through August 26.
Even still, these inexpensive flights probably won't last long, so make sure to reserve as soon as possible.
