Airbnb lifts its 16-guest cap but increases its party ban.

NEWS - 29-06-2022

For Airbnb visitors—at least the party-loving ones—the party is finished.

With an express prohibition on "disruptive parties and activities," the online lodging industry has finally put a stop to celebrations.

In order to adhere to social seclusion guidelines during the epidemic, the vacation rental company declared a brief party embargo in 2020.
The corporation decided to make the prohibition permanent because it was working so effectively.

The party ban evolved into much more than just a precaution for public health, according to a blog post published by Airbnb on Tuesday.
It became a cornerstone of community policy to assist our Hosts and their neighbours.

The corporation continued, "The temporary prohibition has demonstrated its efficacy, and today we are officially codifying the ban as our policy."

Oddly enough, Airbnb is removing the 16-person stay restriction.

So long as the property permits it, you are permitted to stay with a group larger than 16, but whatever you do, don't throw a party.

Absolutely no partying

What precisely makes a party, anyway?

The definition of a party as stated in Airbnb's conditions is still a bit ambiguous.

The corporation calls out "disruptive parties and events" in its announcement, "chronic party houses," as well as "open-invite gatherings (those publicised on social media).
Although Airbnb doesn't explicitly state this in its release, we believe this relates to areas that are known for having a lot of parties.

An assortment of "signals" are used by Airbnb, according to business spokespeople, to evaluate whether a party is in violation of the restriction or not.

These "signals" include things like excessive noise, mess, visitors, and parking that disturbs the neighbourhood.
For the sake of simplicity, imagine you can't do what you're doing if it's excessive.

What is the reason behind the ban?

According to the firm, in the past, Airbnb has allowed hosts to "exercise their best judgment" when deciding whether or not to host parties at their properties.
The document stated that "[then], in late 2019, we tightened our steps to restrict [parties] that had evolved into neighbourhood annoyances."

However, when the epidemic closed bars and clubs around the globe in the spring of 2020, Airbnb turned into a haven for certain party-hungry individuals looking to let their hair down.

The company thus observed an uptick in lockdown-flouting parties occurring under its supervision.

Due to the uninvited individuals' disruptive behaviour as well as the potential for the infection to be spread, Airbnb stated that this was a concern.
As a result, we informed our community that the party restriction was necessary for the sake of public health.

Following the restriction, Airbnb reported a 44 percent year-over-year decline in party reports worldwide, a 49 percent decline in reports in Ireland, and a 63 percent decline in the UK.
Although we can't confirm it, it's plausible that this designates Airbnb as the greatest party pooper in the annals of socialising.

Can I still go abroad with ten pals for a celebratory event that is obviously not a birthday party?

The business stated that it is not normal for parties to spend the weekend playing Trivial Pursuit in silence in the living room.
Phew.

As long as you behave properly, pick up after yourself, and avoid dancing naked in the street at two in the morning, you should be good.

The corporation claims that this is done to stop "disruptive" parties.
In other words, responsible, respectable groups of friends should still be accepted.
Which might imply that you can truly have a party.
Simply act respectfully and discreetly.
with no karaoke system.

What if I wanted to bring 20 members of my family to a castle for quiet time together?

Due to this, Airbnb has lowered its 16-person limit.
Simply avoid making it into a party.

According to the statement, "Our recent Summer Release included Categories, which showcase a variety of larger houses that, by definition, are capable of comfortably and safely accommodating more than 16 people — from castles in Europe to vineyards in the US to enormous beachfront villas in the Caribbean.

According to Airbnb, these are the properties that "thrive on hosting multi-generational family visits and larger groups."
"Removing this cap is intended to allow those Hosts to use their houses responsibly while still adhering to our restriction on disruptive events."

What is the penalty for violators of the rules?

You can even be permanently removed from the website if you violate these strict new regulations.

According to Airbnb, "nearly 6,600 visitors were suspended from the service in 2021 for attempting to break our party rule."
In these situations, we also try to support our Hosts by providing them with AirCover for Hosts property damage protection.

According to the company, "strong regulations must be accompanied by effective enforcement."
To enforce our policy and do our best to prevent both unauthorised parties and chronic party houses, we've implemented a number of anti-party measures in recent years.

These include special holiday anti-party measures, anti-party reservation prevention, a 24-hour safety line, a neighbourhood assistance line, and a collaboration with VRBO to share information on repeat offenders who rent out "party houses."

In conclusion

Parties that might be considered "chronic" or upsetting would never be permitted by us.
However, this decision does strike us as somewhat of a heavy-handed and subjective approach that we anticipate will be very challenging to really carry out.

Additionally, it disregarded the requirements of the many polite partygoers who merely wanted to crack open a few bottles of prosecco, turn on some karaoke, and dance around a kitchen that wasn't theirs without unsettling the peace in the neighbourhood.

Given all of this, if you must party, please do so in a respectful manner.
