American grows once more in Austin while removing 4 flights to the Caribbean and adding 2 new routes.

NEWS - 19-09-2022

The network of American Airlines is undergoing some significant adjustments.

The launch of a second new route from Austin, boosting the carrier's total to over 50 trips from the state's capital, is possibly the most intriguing.

The airline will start operating flights on Jan. 10 between Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) and Memphis International Airport (MEM), according to schedules initially seen on Cirium and then confirmed by a carrier representative.

Envoy Air, a regional affiliate, will operate the new service with a 76-seat Embraer E175, which has 12 first-class recliners, 20 Main Cabin Extra seats with extra legroom, and 44 Main Cabin seats with regular legroom.

The route will run just once each day.

American is expanding the timetable for flights from Austin to PSP and RSW in addition to the additional service from Austin to Memphis.

The airline had initially intended to operate both routes on a few specific days in November, December, and January during the busiest holiday seasons.
American will now operate daily flights on these routes between January 10 and May 4, 2023.

This schedule extension and expansion coincides with American's recent, deliberate development in Austin.
The airline started the expansion in March 2021 with 10 new routes departing from the rapidly expanding metro area.
Since then, the airline has added a tonne of new routes, making Austin into kind of a main city for the airline.

In fact, American disclosed plans to build a new 15,000 square foot Admirals Club in the city late last year.
Floor-to-ceiling windows, a selection of seating places, art exhibits inspired by the surrounding environment, and live performances by regional musicians are all planned.

While the airline is expanding in Austin, it is also undertaking adjustments elsewhere that will impact its service to the Caribbean.

The following four flights will no longer be operated by the airline:

    • Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) — Las Américas International Airport close to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic (SDQ)

    • DFW — Princess Juliana International Airport in St. Martin (SXM)

    • Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) — SDQ

    • PHL — Cibao International Airport, which is close to Santiago, Dominican Republic (STI)

American justifies the route cancellations by citing decreased demand.
Each outstation will continue to be serviced by the carrier from other domestic hubs.

Not all bad news, though, for those going south of the border.
In this week's itinerary update, the carrier did add a new route to Mexico.

The airline will offer a new, 888-mile nonstop service from Phoenix to Monterrey, Mexico, beginning on January 10.
Using an Embraer E175 aircraft, regional affiliate Envoy Air will fly this new daily service.
