Amtrak quietly extends the waiver of change fees for reservations through this month

NEWS - 02-02-2023

Amtrak first discounted its change fees just for reservations placed through last fall, but it now seems to have covertly extended the window once more, this time through February.

This means that, regardless of fare level, any Amtrak bookings made by February 28 are changeable without additional fees.

For reservations made by October 31, 2022, Amtrak waived change fees from the previous summer.

A representative for Amtrak, who did not respond to a request for comment at the time of publishing, said that it also extended "the elimination of various restrictions on Multi-Ride tickets on the Northeast Corridor" until the same date.

All Amtrak journeys, including those paid for with cash tickets and those reserved with Amtrak Guest Rewards miles, are covered by this.

All Amtrak classes, including Saver tickets, the least expensive fare option, are exempt from change costs.

In most cases, Saver rates are nonrefundable after the first 24 hours from the time of booking, and if changes need to be made after that time, a fee equal to 25% of the entire ticket price must be paid.

When making a test reservation for this article, Amtrak's website still warns that a "cancel/change fee may apply" to Saver fares, but this is not true for travel scheduled by February 28.

Prior to September 2021, Amtrak stopped charging change costs for Saver coach fares in response to the COVID-19 epidemic.

Just keep in mind that even while you are free to modify your Amtrak reservation, you might still have to pay the difference in price if your new ticket is more expensive.
This is comparable to how most changes to airline fares operate.

Amtrak states that a fare difference "may apply to your updated itinerary".
A previously purchased fare that has been rebooked to a lesser fare for the same train, date, and origin/destination is not eligible for the waiver of the change fee.

In conclusion

To change your Amtrak reservation, log into your account and select "Modify Trip," or open the Amtrak app and select "Reservations" from the menu.

Calling an Amtrak customer care representative at 800-872-7245 will also allow you to modify your travel plans.
But since you might have to wait on hold if you contact us by phone, we advise updating your itinerary online or through the app if you want to do so quickly.
