Cincinnati becomes British Airways' 27th US city expansion.

NEWS - 18-11-2022

Cincinnati is now receiving its second transatlantic route from British Airways.

From Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) to BA's main hub at London's Heathrow Airport, nonstop service will be available beginning June 5. (LHR).
The airline will operate Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners with 214 seats, including 35 lie-flat seats and 25 in premium economy, between the two cities.

Prior to reducing the frequency to four weekly flights during the slower-demanding winter schedule, British Airways will run the flight five times per week throughout the summer.

In the United States, where British Airways has by far the largest presence of any European airline, Cincinnati will become the airline's 27th destination.

In a statement announcing the new service, British Airways' Neil Chernoff, director of networks and alliances, said that it would "not only open up these destinations to customers on both sides of the Atlantic, but it will also improve connectivity between the Cincinnati region, Europe, and beyond, with opportunities to connect to our wider network via London."

However, Cincinnati's airport, which used to be one of the nation's top connecting hubs, is benefiting from the addition of the nonstop service to London.
In the early 2000s, Delta Air Lines operated a hub there that eventually became the second-largest for the company.
The airline operated a large number of daily flights out of CVG, including a number of well-known transatlantic routes.

However, after merging with Northwest Airlines in 2008, CVG's significance to Delta decreased, and during the following ten years, the airline reduced its schedule there many times before ceasing to use it as a hub entirely in 2017.
Only Delta's nonstop service to Paris remained CVG's only regular route to Europe as of 2022.

With the addition of the London service, the airport now has a second transatlantic route and a boost in status relative to its size.

Airport CEO Candace McGraw stated in a statement that "British Airways' nonstop service from CVG to London-Heathrow is an all-around success for the Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana region."
"This transatlantic trip will have an exponentially positive economic impact on business travel, economic growth, and tourism between the UK and our region of the United States."

The airline has announced intentions to increase the number of flights on its current London routes from Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) and Portland International Airport in Oregon in addition to the new Cincinnati trips (PDX).

The route may be welcomed by Oneworld travelers as an additional choice for mileage tickets to Europe.
Award tickets for June were available via BA's loyalty program for 20,000 Avios one-way in economy and 60,000 in business.
American Airlines, a BA partner, also displayed award availability on BA's nonstop Cincinnati to London flight, with one-way tickets priced at 30,000 miles for economy and 57,500 miles for business in June.
