Everything you should know about annual travel insurance policies

NEWS - 14-07-2022

It is more crucial than ever to protect your vacation plans with travel insurance as demand for travel grows and everything from weather to staffing shortages leads to higher rates and cancellations.

However, deciding on the best kind of plan is not always simple.
There are regular policies that provide general coverage for disruptions, cancellations, and delays; "cancel for any reason" plans that take into account both unanticipated events and personal whims; and less well-known annual choices.

I'll go over all you need to know about the third type—annual travel insurance—in this article.

What is travel insurance for a year?

Annual travel insurance policies, usually referred to as multi-trip plans, are valid for a full year and typically cover all travel until the policy's expiration or the maximum payout amounts are reached.
When you travel further than a predetermined distance from home, the policy often becomes effective.

For instance, my Allianz AllTrips Prime annual plan is still in effect a year after I bought my coverage.
I have coverage for all journeys that take me more than 100 miles from home.

This is distinct from typical travel insurance, which must be bought for each trip and only covers one trip that is explicitly protected.
Instead of covering various travel experiences over a period of time, standard plans start when travel for the insured trip begins and terminate when the insured trip concludes.

What is covered by travel insurance annually?

Depending on the plan you buy, coverage may vary.
Usually, there are multiple tiers to pick from, with the top offering the most coverage and the lowest the least.

I was recently isolated for 10 days after testing positive for COVID-19. Using my policy as an example, I am covered for up to $3,000 per year in trip disruption costs, including hotel room coverage at $250 per night.

Along with a few other minor benefits, my policy provides a $3,000 annual trip cancellation benefit, $20,000 in emergency medical coverage, $100,000 in emergency transportation (including medevac services), $45,000 in rental car theft and damage protection, $25,000 in travel accident coverage, and $1,000 for necessities in the event of baggage loss or damage.

It should be noted that a lot of annual insurance do not offer perks like "cancel for any reason" coverage or trip interruptions.
Before making a purchase, check with your provider if those items are vital to you.

What is the cost of a yearly travel insurance policy?

A travel insurance coverage for the entire year may sound nice, but how much does one cost?
I was astonished to see that, depending on the options you choose, purchasing a yearly policy to cover all of your travel expenses is frequently not significantly more expensive than purchasing individual insurance for one or two trips.

The cost of a good annual travel insurance package will probably be between $200 and $300.
The cost of the plan will increase as you acquire more coverage.
Additionally, the price varies based on factors like your age and the area in which you live.

The best course of action is to get a quote from your favorite provider or compare rates using an aggregator like InsureMyTrip.

Who provides annual travel insurance plans?

The following travel insurance companies, which all offer yearly policies:

    • Travel insurance from Allianz.

    • Travelling with American Express insurance.

    • IMG

    • GeoBlue

    •  Seven Corners

    • World Nomads

    • Travel Guard

When should I buy yearly travel insurance?

There are a number of reasons why purchasing annual travel insurance may be preferable to purchasing separate plans for each trip.
It can be more affordable than buying separate coverage for each trip if you travel frequently—more than twice or three times annually.

It makes sense to me because I frequently take a dozen or more trips every year because I travel for a living.
Additionally, a lot of my travel is comped, which makes it more challenging to find insurance.
(I often am unable to insure something if I haven't paid for a trip, airline, or hotel since I can't associate a financial figure with it.
Additionally, I wouldn't be able to offer purchase receipts if a problem arose and I needed to make a claim.)

Other things to think about are your health, how adventurous your travels might be, whether you have coverage as a benefit of your credit card, and the cost of your travel plans in comparison to the amount of coverage you could get from an annual plan or individual policies.

COVID-19 is currently another thing to think about.
The annual plan made sense to me because the majority of Allianz's individual policies don't cover COVID-19-related issues.
But the yearly coverage I bought does.

Additional information about annual travel insurance policies

When thinking about a similar plan, there are a few more things to keep in mind that I've discovered through utilizing annual travel insurance and making claims for covered trip disruptions.

    • Make careful to ask questions about particular features that are significant to you before deciding to acquire any travel insurance package. These were medevac coverage, trip interruption benefits, and COVID-19 coverage for me.
    • If you choose a yearly policy, be aware that your coverage does not start over every time you travel As a result, if a trip doesn't go as planned, you make a claim, and you use the whole amount of your plan's benefit, you won't be able to use that benefit for the rest of the policy year.
    • You might need to return home in between travel sessions for each trip to be covered, depending on your policy If they take numerous consecutive trips, they might not be eligible for coverage under your annual insurance plan; thus, be sure to read the fine print and make your travel arrangements accordingly.
    • Keep your policy card and provider phone number with the other critical documents you carry on your trip if you get annual or multi-trip travel insurance so they are readily available in an emergency.
    • If you find yourself in a scenario that qualifies for coverage and would like to be reimbursed, save all receipts and take pictures to support your claims when you submit them.
    • Even if you believe that all of your expenses will be paid, don't assume that they will be. It doesn't hurt to try, however in my instance, the hotel costs I listed were only partially covered by my Allianz plan.
