First-ever flights from New York are being offered to these remote islands

NEWS - 10-05-2023

How about a trip to the Faroe Islands in the late summer?

The national airline of the Faroe Islands, Atlantic Airways, is staking its bet that there will be sufficient demand to fill 168 seats to and from New York.

In order to start operating between New York Stewart International Airport (SWF) and Vágar Airport (FAE), the only airport in the Faroe Islands, the airline recently filed proposals over the weekend.

Cirium timetables were the first to show the 3,024-mile service, which would run seasonally once per week from Aug. 22 through Oct. 4. There will only be 14 trips in each way. On May 15, tickets will go on sale, albeit the price of those tickets is still unknown.

There are only three Airbus narrow-body aircraft in Atlantic Airways' small fleet. There are no premium recliners or lie-flat seats on the approximately six-hour flight to New York because the Airbus A320neo is outfitted exclusively with economy seating.

On Wednesdays, eastbound service will run, departing SWF at 10:45 in the morning and arriving in the Faroe Islands at 10:05 in the evening local time. Tuesdays will be the days for the westbound service, which will leave the Faroe Islands at 4:30 p.m. local time and arrive at SWF at 6:50 p.m.

"This new historic link between the Faroe Islands and the United States excites us greatly. On both sides of the Atlantic, interest in this new route is extremely high, according to a statement from Jóhanna á Bergi, CEO of Atlantic Airways.

This will be the country's first-ever nonstop service to the Faroe Islands, assuming the flights take off as scheduled. Although Atlantic Airways has recently hinted at the possibility of operating flights to the United States, it appears that 2023 will be the year that it actually does.

Historically, there hasn't been much aviation service to the Danish territory's Faroe Islands, which are in the North Atlantic Ocean. The single airport in the region serves Torshavn, the largest city in the Faroe Islands, and is known as Vágar Airport.

Despite the fact that the Faroe Islands may not be well-known to many Americans, the islands are renowned for their spectacular landscapes and ecotourism. The Faroe Islands may benefit from the introduction of a new nonstop link, but the once-weekly flight schedule is unlikely to be very useful for anyone seeking a quick holiday.

While Stewart Airport service has its own set of difficulties, it is located near Newburgh, New York. The airport's portfolio of routes has recently been a focus for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which also operates the airport. Play, an Icelandic ultra-low-cost airline, as well as Allegiant and Frontier domestic flights, are now offered.

Stewart isn't as close to New York City as the three major airports in the area, LaGuardia Airport (LGA), Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), and John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), despite the recent opening of a new international arrivals facility and other improvements to the passenger experience.

Coach USA and the Port Authority collaborate to provide conveniently timed bus transfers to and from SWF, which is located about 70 miles from New York City. Buses leave from Manhattan's Midtown Bus station and stop in front of Stewart's passenger station.
