How to fly with your pet on Spirit Airlines, according their pet policy

NEWS - 15-08-2022

Looking to bring your pet on your upcoming trip?
If so, compared to most other airlines, Spirit Airlines allows you to fly with a wider variety of pets.
The Spirit pet policy specifically permits you to bring small domestic birds, domestic rabbits, domestic dogs, and domestic cats on board.

But be aware of the restrictions and regulations you must adhere to before you book your travel and bring your pet to the airport.
Here is all the information you need to know about taking your pet on a flight with Spirit Airlines.

The pet policy at Spirit Airlines

Domesticated dogs and cats are allowed to travel on Spirit Airlines flights throughout the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, according to the airline's pet policy.
Additionally, although small domestic rabbits and "home birds" (excluding chickens and ducks) are permitted to fly in-cabin on Spirit, these animals can only fly domestically (not to or from Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands).

Animals are also not permitted to fly as freight with Spirit.
Therefore, due to Spirit Airlines' dog policy, larger canines are sadly not permitted to travel on the airline.

At least eight weeks must pass after a pet's mother has completely weaned it.
Additionally, a rabies vaccination certificate is needed for going to Puerto Rico, and health certifications are needed for animals traveling to the U.S. Virgin Islands.

While dogs are not permitted on international flights with Spirit, service animals are permitted.

With the exception of the first row and the emergency exit row, you may select any seat when traveling with an authorized pet on Spirit.
Your pet must be "harmless, inoffensive, and odorless," remain in its carrier the entire flight, and be incapable of requiring attention.

Booking a flight with Spirit Airlines for your pet

To bring a pet in the cabin on Spirit Airlines, there is a $125 one-way surcharge.
Reservations are advised but not necessary.
Since Spirit only allows a maximum of six pet carriers per flight, it is generally preferable to reserve a seat for your pet as soon as possible.
Contact Spirit directly if you want to include a pet in your reservation.

According to Spirit Airlines' pet policy, you must check in at the ticket counter at the airport (curbside or self-service check-in are not permitted).
A Spirit representative will examine and approve both your pet and its container when you visit the ticket desk.

Pet carrier requirements for Spirit Airlines

If two comparable animals can fit in one pet carrier, you may bring them on Spirit.
The pet (or pets) must be able to stand up and turn around in the carrier.
Only soft-sided carriers with dimensions no more than 18 inches by 14 inches by nine inches are permitted; however, the kind that allows the pet's head to protrude outside is forbidden.

The carrier must be stowed under the seat in front of you and remain there throughout the journey.
The pet and carrier cannot weigh more than 40 pounds together, according to Spirit's pet policy.

Your pet carrier will be considered one of the items you are permitted to bring on board thanks to Spirit's baggage regulation.
Therefore, you are only allowed to bring one more item in addition to your pet carrier: either a personal item (free) or a carry-on item (with a price).

In conclusion

You may bring your dog (as long as it's small enough), cat, rabbit, or bird with you on most flights thanks to Spirit Airlines' somewhat tolerant pet policy.
And even if Spirit charges a lot for everything "extra" during your trip, the cost to fly with your pet is comparable to those of the other major U.S. airlines (although on the higher end of the scale).
