More than 100 flights are canceled by EasyJet due to summer storms.

NEWS - 13-06-2023

In the previous 48 hours, EasyJet had to cancel more than 100 flights because of strong thunderstorms and unfavorable weather.

Passengers flying on Sunday and Monday through London Gatwick Airport (LGW) were impacted by the disruptions. In the former, 54 flights were canceled, and in the latter, 55 flights were canceled along with several delays.

More than 15,000 people are thought to have been impacted by the canceled flights, many of them were traveling to Europe for early summer vacations.

The delays followed a period of intense thunderstorms that disrupted the regular flow of arrivals and departures in the Gatwick region. Flights to a number of well-known locations, including the Canary Islands, Turkey, and Greece, were consequently canceled. As a result of the substantial disruption, subsequent flights will have aircraft and crew members who are out of position.

An EasyJet representative expressed regret for the inconvenience.

"We are doing everything we can to lessen the impact on our customers," the representative added. "Those on canceled flights have the option to rebook or receive a refund as well as hotel accommodation and meals where necessary." "EasyJet places a high priority on the safety and well-being of both passengers and crew and while this is out of our control, we would like to apologize to customers for the inconvenience caused," the airline said.

Since more weather-related concerns are expected, travelers are encouraged to check with the airline before taking off.

Affected passengers will not be eligible for compensation under the EU261 rule since weather conditions are regarded to be outside of airlines' control. However, in accordance with the law, the airline you're flying with is required to make sure that impacted passengers are rebooked on substitute flights at no additional cost. When necessary, they should also offer meal vouchers and lodging.

A representative for Gatwick Airport stated that due to temporary air traffic restrictions put in place yesterday as a result of stormy weather that affected the south of England and Europe, some flights were delayed and canceled. London Gatwick regrets any difficulty that may have caused. Passengers should get more information from their airline since more thunderstorms are anticipated today.

The Gatwick Express's fast train services have been temporarily suspended for critical track maintenance, adding to the inconveniences for passengers. Although there are other rail routes available, the service is not anticipated to start until at least Tuesday.

In conclusion

At London Gatwick Airport, severe weather has resulted in considerable aircraft delays and cancellations for EasyJet passengers.

Passengers are not eligible for EU261 compensation when weather-related delays are beyond the airline's control. However, if you are impacted by these delays, be aware that you should book on the following flight and, in some circumstances, receive food coupons and overnight accommodations.
