One of American's newest international destinations is being discontinued after only 18 months.

There is a notable pin disappearing from American Airlines' route map.

The Fort Worth-based airline announced intentions over the weekend to discontinue service to Paramaribo, Suriname, beginning on March 1, 2023. This information was initially revealed in Cirium timetables and later verified by an airline official.

Before, American had intended to maintain year-round service from Miami to the nation's Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport (PBM), with daily flights in the summer and five flights per week in the winter.
A 128-seat Airbus A319 was used by American in this market.

A representative for the airline confirmed the action in a statement and said that the route had fallen short of expectations, which was the reason for the decision to discontinue service.
"American Airlines will no longer offer service to Paramaribo, Suriname, as of March 1 due to weak demand.
Customers with travel reservations after this date will receive proactive contact from us with suggestions for alternative travel plans "a spokesman stated.

In September 2021, American launched service to Suriname as a part of a substantial expansion of Miami-focused routes during the epidemic.
With new services from Miami to Suriname, Tel Aviv, the Dominican Republic, and other new and expanded domestic routes, the airline was able to strengthen one of its "core" bases.

Additionally, American's hub in Miami serves as the airline's entry point to Latin America.
The addition of Suriname to American's list of Miami-based destinations strengthened the airline's position in the area and encouraged more travelers to fly with American.

This is especially true given how challenging it has historically been to travel straight to Suriname from the United States.
The only airline operating nonstop flights between the two nations was Surinam Airways, but according to Cirium timetables, its flights only left from Miami roughly once a week.
The only stops on its current route from Miami to Suriname are Guyana or Aruba.

Travelers will now need to connect or take one-stop flights that operate as triangle routes in order to reach this South American country since Surinam Airways isn't currently planning any nonstop flights from the United States to Suriname.
