Southwest's first aircraft is now equipped with power ports.

NEWS - 04-05-2023

Soon, you won't have to be concerned about running out of power when traveling with Southwest Airlines.

Recently, the Dallas-based airline began operating its first aircraft with USB charging outlets. The 5-year-old Boeing 737 MAX 8 with the registration N8710M, which was also the first MAX that Southwest received, resumed service on April 28 following a roughly month-long refurbishment and repainting operation.

The carrier also gave the outside of the aircraft a fresh coat of paint while putting in the new power outlets inside. Imua One, the name of this unique livery, which honors Hawaii and its culture as well as marks the carrier's fourth year of serving the Aloha State, is named after the native Hawaiian word for "resolute."

Despite the livery initially grabbing your attention, the improved passenger experience is arguably just as thrilling.

A 60-watt USB-C port and a 10.5-watt USB-A port are now provided on each seat, making it possible to charge two devices at once. You should be aware that the jet lacks standard power outlets.

Southwest's aircraft have never had USB ports or power outlets. When your phone or laptop failed, you wouldn't have any options unless you had a portable charger with you; I suggest an Anker model.

When Southwest's average flight duration was shorter, this might not have been as big of a problem. To Hawaii (and many other destinations), the carrier now operates hours-long flights.

The airline previously stated that it would devote $2 billion to in-flight improvements, including larger overhead bins, power connections, and speedier Wi-Fi.

On its Boeing 737 MAX fleet, both new and used aircraft will have USB-A and USB-C power ports installed at every seat. To its non-MAX 737 aircraft, which still make up the majority of its fleet of more than 700 aircraft, the airline does not currently have any plans to add power ports.

"By the end of [2023], we intend to have roughly 250 aircraft equipped with power. In an interview with us at the time, Ryan Green, Southwest's chief marketing officer, said: "Power's going to be installed in every seat, in the seatback in front of you – so you don't have to look for the power outlet behind and underneath your leg.

Regarding Wi-Fi enhancements, freshly delivered 737 MAX aircraft will have ViaSat connectivity (a new provider for Southwest), while current Anuvu connectivity is getting the most recent hardware.
