Spirit expands its network by 3 routes by including Charleston.

NEWS - 15-12-2022

Early in the next year, Charleston, South Carolina will welcome Spirit Airlines.

The largest city in South Carolina will be added to the carrier's route map on April 5, 2023, according to a statement made on Wednesday by the Miramar, Florida-based company.
Three daily services will be served by Spirit out of Charleston International Airport (CHS):

    • Fort Lauderdale.

    • Newark.

    • Philadelphia.

Charleston will join service to Myrtle Beach, which has been running for more than 25 years, as Spirit's second route-map pin in South Carolina.

According to Spirit's vice president of network planning, John Kirby, "We're thrilled to connect the lovely city of Charleston, South Carolina, with three of the largest metro regions on the East Coast."

The new flights, according to Spirit, are fantastic for both residents and tourists.
The airline will provide a large number of nonstop flights via its gateway in Fort Lauderdale from Charleston to well-known locations all around Latin America and the Caribbean.
Locals will benefit from having increased access to major Northeast cities as a result of service to Philadelphia and the greater New York City area.

In addition, "the Northeast and Florida have always been top regions of origin for travelers," said Helen Hill, chair of Charleston's aviation authority, indicating that Spirit can probably access a sizable market of people seeking to travel to Charleston from important East Coast towns.

Particularly among leisure tourists seeking adventures focused on the outdoors, Charleston has increased in favor as a destination in recent years.
The city has seen a rise in visitors as a result of the neighboring shoreline, golf courses, and other attractions.

The route from Newark is possibly the most intriguing.
Spirit just secured a few highly sought-after spots there that were left vacant after Southwest Airlines departed the airport in 2019.
These takeoff and landing permits were granted to Spirit by the Department of Transportation in an effort to boost competition at the airport, particularly in opposition to United Airlines' dominant position there.

Spirit's service will compete directly with United, which has historically been the only airline operating between Newark and Charleston.

Spirit will compete in Philadelphia against American Airlines and the soon-to-reopen Frontier Airlines, a low-cost competitor, which will start seasonal service from Philadelphia to Charleston on March 9, 2023, according to Cirium timetables.

JetBlue Airways and Silver Airways already provide service between Charleston and South Florida, so Spirit will have a lot of competition there.

Along with Spirit, CHS has lately made headlines for acquiring a new airline service from startup Breeze Airways, which includes the city as one of its hubs.
Breeze has already extended from Charleston on several occasions throughout its 18 months of operation.

Avelo Airlines, a new airline based in New Haven, Connecticut, also recently started operating flights to Charleston.
Approximately twice a week, that service is offered.

In any case, Spirit is looking to make a statement in the new market with affordable introductory rates that start at $39 for travel to and from Philadelphia and $49 for travel to and from Fort Lauderdale and Newark.
