Swiss railway innovation hits a major milestone with track-jumping cars

NEWS - 14-12-2022

Because of their breathtakingly beautiful routes, impeccable timeliness, and amazing engineering, Swiss trains are already regarded as the gold standard by both train enthusiasts and tourists.
This is how trains like the Glacier Express can travel along curvy roads and ascend to the Alps' dizzying heights.

It might come as a bit of a shock to learn that the Swiss were unable to reach a significant milestone in rail innovation until this past weekend.
For the first time ever, the new GoldenPass Express traveled on December 11 from Montreux to Interlaken via Gstaad without requiring a train change.

Not simply the road is noteworthy.
The train itself, run by the Montreux-Berner Oberland Railway (MOB), is a combination of striking design and ground-breaking technology that enables it to "jump" in both height and width while also changing electrical voltage.
In this way, it will be possible to combine some of Switzerland's most well-known tourist attractions into a single voyage that has been planned for 150 years.

Attempts to connect these beautiful Swiss locations date back to 1873.
However, for almost a century and a half, connecting the two main train lines between destinations near dazzling Lake Geneva and the towering Swiss Alps had proven to be too challenging due to the need to negotiate two distinct types of rails, metric gauge, and standard gauge.
Along with having differing widths, these two track types also differ in height and voltage.
Passengers had to dismount and switch trains in order to get from one breathtaking Swiss site to another.

Now, however, at Zweisimmen Station, where the standard gauge and metric gauge portions of the journey intersect, a variable gauge bogie first created in 2007 jumps into action, so to speak.
The coach's flaps are raised to enable for positioning as the train crosses the gauge-adapting ramp.
It's a sleek engineering feat that looks as at home in a science fiction film as it does in contemporary transportation.

The new $96 million train offers a luxurious trip with immersive views through panoramic windows in addition to nonstop service and breathtaking vistas of the surrounding natural beauties.
Additionally, it features luxurious compartments with cozy swivel seats and even a gourmet menu of goodies, such as charcuterie and caviar, to enjoy along the route.
Passengers may thoroughly take in the stunning Swiss scenery on this train.
