This fall, Air New Zealand will introduce new economy-class sleep pods.

NEWS - 14-04-2023

This fall, Air New Zealand will introduce its brand-new sleep pods for travelers in economy class.

According to the Washington Post, the airline will begin delivering its most recent batch of 787-9 Dreamliners in September, which will include its ground-breaking Skynest offering. The product will have six sleep pods that economy-class travelers can purchase as an add-on to a standard seat. The airline first unveiled the concept just before the COVID-19 epidemic brought air travel to a halt in 2020.

The Skynest has two rows of three bunk beds piled in a V-shape that faces outward.

Unknown is other information on the product, such as which routes will first provide the Skynest and its cost. Also unknown is whether Air New Zealand will sell access to a Skynest bed for the duration of the trip (except taxi, departure, and landing) or if passengers can buy access in blocks of time, with flight attendants refilling the area mid-flight.

The Skynest is Air New Zealand's most recent initiative to aid sleep for those traveling in economy. The airline will keep offering its well-liked Skycouch product, a trio of economy seats that can be converted into a bed.

According to the Washington Post, "the configuration is ideal for individuals, couples, and parents with small children to sleep soundly at an additional cost that remains business class prices," noting that the exact cost has not yet been decided as of April 2023.

Prior to publication, an inquiry for response from Air New Zealand was not answered. There will be more updates to this developing story.
