Which well-known destinations impose a tourist tax (or intend to do so soon)?

NEWS - 05-05-2023

When traveling abroad, it's a good idea to budget for any tourist taxes you might have to pay while there.

A few tiny additional fees for tourist taxes are added to the nightly cost of your lodging. Some fees, like the new tourist tax in Thailand, maybe one-time (or even daily) charges. These fees can be rather expensive in some locations, such as Bhutan.

It's possible that this type of tax has been enacted in your destination for a number of reasons. It might be a solution to issues with over-tourism, sustainability, and the environment (as in the case of Venice, Italy), or it might just be a measure to assist the local economy in reinvesting money in the tourism industry's infrastructure.

We'll examine popular tourist destinations that charge a tourism tax in this article, along with how much they'll cost you.

United Kingdom and Europe

Amsterdam

The tourist tax in Amsterdam is 7% of the cost of the hotel + 3 euros ($3.32) each night, with additional fees for certain types of accommodations. (Check out the city of Amsterdam's official website for more information on the various taxes.)

Balearic Islands, Spain

Depending on the type of lodging, fees on the islands range from 1 euro to 4 euros ($1 to $4.40) a night. Menorca, Mallorca, Formentera, and Ibiza are all subject to this sustainable tourist tax.

Barcelona

Rent in Barcelona costs 5 euros ($5.53) a night, but a stay in a five-star hotel costs 6.25 euros ($6.92). These fees reflect the adjustments made in April 2023; a subsequent increase is planned for 2024.

Germany

The tourist tax in Berlin is 5% of the cost of the hotel. In other locations, like Frankfurt, it might be as low as 2 euros ($2.21) per night or as high as 3 euros ($3.32) per night.

Greece

Greece charges between 0.50 euros (55 cents) to 4 euros ($4.43) per night, depending on the kind of lodging.

The recently implemented City Visitor Charge is $1.25 (£1.25) per room, each night.

Depending on the type of lodging you select, the city will charge you anything from 0.80 euros (89 cents) and 4 euros ($4.43) per night.

Valencia, Spain

Depending on the type of lodging you select, Valencia's tourist fees will range from 0.50 euros to 2 euros (50 cents to $2.20) each night beginning at the end of 2023.

Venice, Italy

Taxes are paid on your accommodation and range from 1 euro to 5 euros ($1.11 to $5.50) every night in this well-known tourist attraction. Future plans call for the introduction of a day-trip tax, which will cost between 3 and 10 euros ($3.32 and $11), depending on the season.

Other destinations

Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Hungarian capital of Budapest, Malta, Montenegro, Slovenia, and Switzerland are other nations in Europe that impose tourist taxes. There may only be local tourist taxes in some places.

Make sure to conduct your own study before your trip because tourist taxes can always be implemented later. This is especially true for Edinburgh, Scotland, where a 2.50 euro ($2.50) per night hotel tax is about to be implemented. Discussions over a potential tourism tax are also ongoing in Wales.

North America

California

According to Turbotax, a transient occupancy tax of between 10% to 14% of the room cost will be charged for hotel stays. There can also be additional taxes relating to tourism.

Canada

The cost of hotels varies depending on where in the country you go, although visitor taxes are typically included in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, and Quebec.

Hawaii

Hawaii doesn't currently have a tourist tax, although a $50 Green Fee visitor fee may be implemented in the near future.

New York City

According to the New York City government website, the tourist tax in this area is around 14% of the cost of the stay plus up to $2 per room, each night.

Check the specifics before making a reservation or departing, as certain airfares may already contain a departure tax.

Any destination in Quintana Roo requires a one-time tourist fee of 224 Mexican pesos ($12.39) to visit. This comprises Tulum, Playa del Carmen, Holbox, Cozumel, and Cancun. In these regions and other parts of Mexico, hotel stays may also be subject to a tourist tax.

Asia and the Pacific

Malaysia

The tourist tax in Malaysia is 10 Malaysian ringgits ($2.27) per night and per accommodation.
